2018 was the year that marked the breakthrough of Pablo Remón as one of Spain’s most suggestive and accurate playwrights today. He released El tratamiento, an emotive portrait of the schizoid life of the screenwriters’ guild, and Mariachis, a flawless x-ray of the origins of political and business corruption. The latter demonstrates that going over to the dark side is not so difficult in the materialist and competitive context in which we live. Mariachis also offers a fresco painting of ‘Empty Spain’. Using a register that lies between documentary and surrealism, Remón reflects upon the frustration and existential stagnation of its inhabitants falling number. He has a cast that is at its peak: Israel Elejalde, Luis Bermejo, Francisco Reyes and Emilio Tomé. They all give a lesson of credibility in this tragicomedy set in the depressed Castilian highland. Pablo Remón returns to the Principal after 40 años de paz and El tratamiento, which we saw in previous seasons, leaving the audience with a pleasant aftertaste.
