Achterland Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker/Rosas

Achterland is a seminal choreography created by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. In this production, first performed in 1990, the choreographers give the musicians centre stage, which allows them to play an important and active role in the general dynamic, a focus that will be repeated many times in future projects. The unusual musical combination of György Ligeti and Eugène Ysaÿe inspired Keersmaeker and her dancers to create original dance music with a delicate balance between energetic virtuosity and deceleration. This was also the first time that the choreographer wrote dances specifically for men - three male dancers were added to the company that, up until then, had been predominantly female. In Achterland, the femininity and minimalism that are so prevalent in many of Rosas’ other works give way to an ambiguous middle ground characterised by a confusion of borders and symbols.
