Rediscovering Maqués
February 26, 2018, is the hundredth anniversary of the death of one of our most renown composers Pere Miquel Marqués, who studied with Berlioz in Paris. In addition to being the leading Spanish figure in symphonic music in the second half of the 19th century (they gave him the nickname the ‘Spanish Beethoven’), he worked intensely in the genre of zarzuela. El Teatre Principal, which is committed to the recovery and dissemination of the heritage of Majorca, commemorate him by including in our program El reloj de Lucerna, a lyric drama in three acts, which critics of the time considered his masterpiece. It was first performed in 1884 at the Apolo in Madrid, and it continued to play for 20 years. Now it has been revived thanks to the collaboration of El Principal with the Complutense Institute of Musical Sciences (ICCMU). Researchers have carried out a detailed reconstruction of the manuscripts conserved in the archives of the SGAE. A mostly local cast will perform the revival of the complete 15 scenes of which this exquisite and truly inspired work consist.
