Seduction, unfaithfulness, jealousy, violence, drama... “Carmen will never yield! Free she was born and free she will die!”, proclaims the protagonist at the end of this classic opera composed by Georges Bizet. In this production by Calixto Bieito, we see this irrepressible freedom, coupled with a need to live ever more intensely on a knife-edge, which is more present here than in any other. The events take place in Spain during the 70s, and Bieito creates a powerful atmosphere despite using few scenic items. This adaptation of Carmen is fuelled by both lyrical and explicit scenes, showing Calixto Bieito at his best. The Italian mezzo-soprano Annalisa Stroppa plays the role of the eponymous protagonist, while Don José is depicted by Andeka Gorrotxategi. The cast is rounded out by soloists Marta Bauzá, Pablo López, Jorge Tello, Tomeu Bibiloni and Marga Cloquell, all of whom are from the Balearic Islands.
Some scenes may be inappropriate for the young and the easily offended.
