This opera by Jacques Offenbach is considered one of the greatest French Romantic masterpieces. It is a compendium of stories by the writer and musician Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann, with a libretto in French by Jules Barbier.
Surreal and extravagant stories, punctuated by intense passions, evil characters and so on. Vincent Huguet's stage version has a humorous twist in a new production by the Opéra National de Bordeaux.
An opera is being performed in a theatre in Nuremberg. The prima donna is Hoffmann's beloved Stella, who combines the souls of his three previous great loves. During the intermission, Hoffman goes to a nearby tavern and reminisces about his passions with Olympia, who is a mechanical doll that enchanted him; Antonia, who is doomed to die if she sings with her beautiful voice; and Giulietta, a courtesan who tricks Hoffmann into surrendering his reflection to her.
This version of Tales of Hoffmann features the musical direction of Yi-Chen Lin, and a top-class cast: Ramón Vargas, Simón Orfila, Pauline Texier, Annalisa Stroppa, Marta Bauzà, Marga Cloquell, Joan Gabriel Riera, Carlos Daza, Joan Miquel Muñoz, Josep Fadò, Natalia Salom and Sebastià Serra. As always, they will be accompanied by the Cor del Teatre Principal (Choir of the Teatre Principal) and the Orquestra Simfònica de les Illes Balears (Symphony Orchestra of the Balearic Islands).
The Tales of Hoffmann is an opera in three acts with a foreword and epilogue, which was first performed on 20 February 1881 at the Opéra Comique in Paris.
