After 25 years being Domenico Soriano’s kept, and due to his continuous refusals to marry her, Filumena starts pretending to have a deadly disease so that Domenico agrees to marry her at her deathbed. The house is full of doctors and neighbours, and in the midst of this sorrowful atmosphere it is the priest who turns up in order to give her the last rites and to organize the wedding. In the meantime, Domenico’s young mistress is anxiously waiting for Filumena’s death in the next room. Once married, Filumena gets up from bed fresh as a daisy, and that’s the exact moment when the show begins.

What’s the reason why Filumena has orchestrated such a charade? Why is she so obsessed with marrying Domenico? And, what about him? Why has he been running away from marriage for 25 years? This is a screwball comedy, full of secrets and deluding intentions. Filumena is the main character and her journey through life has been full of deceits and thefts and she has kept taking advantage of Domenico, who has always lived in affluence. The outburst of their love relationship affects everything and everyone around them, even those who are not around yet. The cards have finally been laid on the table, but we all know that truth often hurts…

Eduardo de Filipo’s Italian atmosphere tells us about love and revenge, about the survival instinct and about human littleness. This play is a Neapolitan portrait where the landlady tries her luck and reminds us what kind of force love is, and how it sometimes bounces off opposite directions
