Social redemption through theatre is the philosophy that drove the 2009 project to stage La casa de Bernarda Alba, which was performed at the Principal in February 2012, with women of Roma ethnicity from the shanty town of El Vacíe (Seville). It ended up becoming a real phenomenon. Many of the actresses told the director Pepa Gamboa, that thanks to this work, they had felt like people for the first time. Motivated by the success, Gamboa begin to look for another text in order to stage it with the same actresses once again. She reached the conclusion that Fuenteovejuna was ideal, as it is the first work in Spanish theatre where women take charge of their destiny and question the power that they are subjected to. Once again, Gamboa and her accomplices offer a show filled with truth and depth.
