One of the most important works of Spanish literature, adapted for the first time to theatre in a version that is faithful to the original text.
Leopoldo Alas Clarín’s classic addresses the clash of the overwhelming passion of desire and love against the chains of provincial moral and treason.
Set in the city of Vetusta, La Regenta (published in 1884) is one of the major novels of nineteenth-century Spanish literature and one of the most important of all time according to numerous critics. It is defined as a naturalist work which portrays the harsh ambient of a provincial city ruled by an idle high class and by a clergy that imposes a hypocritical and suppressive moral.
Ana Ozores is the protagonist. She is a young and beautiful lady who marries Don Víctor Quintanar, the old ruling judge of Vetusta. Don Víctor is notably older than her, is mean, and lives in a world that has little to do with reality. Ana feels herself oppressed in her marriage; due to this frustration, she is entrapped by Don Álvaro, the Don Juan of the city, and also by her own confessor, Don Fermín de Pas, who longs for marrying her.
Coproduced by Teatro Fernán Gómez, Centro Cultural de LA Villa, and Secuencia 3.
