Reputed expert on comparative literature, Nela Simari, has been invited to give the inaugural lecture at the international congress on European cinema. The Lecture is both a homage to a recently deceased professor as well as a detailed compared analysis of the relationship between Víctor Català’s great novel and Rossellini’s emblematic film, the one that is deemed to be the starting point of modern cinema. PhD Professor Simari faces an important challenge: to demonstrate català’s capital and still unrecognized influence on the Italian filmmaker’s masterpiece. That said, as her lecture develops a more personal challenge also comes to light: It opens wounds from the past with the perspective of the present times.
Freely inspired in a study by Rosa Delor, Nuria Casado Gual’s text introduces this peculiar master class that takes us into the parallel universes of Soledad (Solitude) and Stromboli while providing with an occasion for reflecting on the concept of authorship, the creative act itself and, above all, on who comes out to the light and who remains in the shadows in the complex account of History.
