The word Sonoma is a non-existing word in Spanish language dictionaries. Notwithstanding, it contains the Greek morpheme ‘soma’ (body) or the Latin ‘sonum’ (sound): the body of sound and the sound of the body.
Our life rhythm is stressful these days; so accelerated that nobody knows what’s going on indeed. We basically fall with the face against the ground, and while we fall –like in a roller-coaster – we yell.
Sonoma thus means the sound produced by our falling body. It could be defined as the shout of the man sentenced to this fall down to the limits of his existence; a primitive yell that the body expels, the human heartbeat that makes you feel alive.
Sonoma; or the conviction that a trip back to our origins is the only way to overcome the virtual and digital realms.
Marcos Morau (awarded with the Premi Nacional de Dansa 2013) revisits the essential ideas present in his Le Surréalisme au service de la Révolution (2016), created for the Ballet de Lorraine, which places Buñuel around medieval Calanda and cosmopolitan Paris. Sonoma develops and expands this microcosm in this project with La Veronal. Sonoma sprouts from the need of going back to the origins, to the body, the flesh.
