Un tercer lugar, (A Third Place), a clever and sentimental comedy by the Uruguayan author and director Denise Despeyroux. The good kind of entertainment. A regular on independent circuits and an indisputable benchmark in contemporary new theatre writing, her work is based around concerns of a certain existential nature and a marked tendency towards depictions of the heart and its ins and outs. And also its edges. In this show, which enjoyed a very successful premiere at the Teatro Español, six deeply neurotic characters try to interact with one another as well as they can, and also love one another the best they know how to. Which isn´t easy. Six interlinked figures in this intricate sentimental map, actively searching for love. Interwoven stories created with an intelligent absurd humour and brilliant dialogue that has echoes of Woody Allen or Cortázar. A fresco of the incapacity of human beings to communicate with one another that is as hilarious as it is deeply emotive. The “third place” is, according to Despeyroux, a strange and alien place that must be felt before it is found.
